This policy explains what cookies DeskDodes uses, what each one does, and how to control them. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers personal information more broadly.

The short version

Some cookies are needed for the cart and checkout to work at all. The rest — analytics and advertising — are optional, and you can turn them off without breaking the site.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device. When you come back, the site reads it and recognises your browser — that's how a shopping cart still has your mower in it after you close the tab.

How they're categorised

  • Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser
  • Persistent cookies stay for a set period, or until you delete them
  • First-party cookies are set by our own site
  • Third-party cookies are set by services we use, such as analytics

Why we use them

Mostly so the store works: keeping your cart, keeping you logged in, and protecting the checkout. Beyond that, they tell us which machines people look at, which helps us decide what to stock.

2. The categories we use

Essential

Cart, checkout, login and security. The store can't work without them.

Always on

Analytics

Anonymous data about which pages get visited and where people run into problems.

Optional

Functional

Remembers preferences like recently viewed machines and saved filters.

Optional

Advertising

Measures our advertising and shows relevant ads on other sites.

3. Essential cookies

These keep the store working. Blocking them will break the cart and checkout.

Plugins we use may set additional essential cookies. The list above covers the ones our store and checkout rely on.

4. Analytics cookies

These tell us how the site is being used, in aggregate. They don't identify you by name.

What we learn

  • Which mowers and categories get looked at most
  • How people arrive at the site
  • Where people abandon a purchase, so we can find out why
  • Page load times and errors
  • Rough location at country or state level, useful for freight

Services we use

  • Google Analytics (_ga, _ga_*) — traffic and behaviour, typically stored for 2 years
  • Google Tag Manager — manages which tags load on the site

5. Functional cookies

These remember your choices so you don't repeat them.

  • Recently viewed: the machines you've looked at
  • Wishlist: mowers you've saved for later
  • Filters: deck width, mower type and price filters you've applied
  • Compare list: machines you've put side by side
  • Live chat: whether the chat window is open and what was said

Turning these off doesn't break the store. It just means the site forgets your preferences between visits.

6. Advertising cookies

If you consent to advertising cookies, they're used to:

  • Measure which of our ads lead to sales
  • Show you a mower you viewed, on other sites you visit
  • Limit how often you see the same advertisement

Advertising partners

  • Google Ads — search and display advertising
  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram) — social advertising and retargeting

Declining advertising cookies doesn't mean you stop seeing ads. It means the ones you see are less likely to be relevant to you.

7. Third-party cookies

Some cookies come from services embedded in our site rather than from us. We can't control these directly — each provider sets its own and has its own privacy policy.

  • Payment processor: fraud prevention and secure checkout
  • Live chat: keeping your conversation open across pages
  • Embedded video: machine demonstrations hosted elsewhere
  • Reviews: displaying verified customer reviews

We recommend reading those providers' policies if you want the full picture. Blocking third-party cookies in your browser stops most of them.

8. Managing your preferences

Essential cookies can't be switched off, because the cart and checkout depend on them. Everything else is optional.

You can control optional cookies through your browser or device settings — see sections 9 and 10 below. Blocking third-party cookies stops most analytics and advertising tracking while leaving the store working normally.

Deleting cookies signs you out

Clearing cookies for this site empties your cart and logs you out of your account. Your order history is safe — it's stored against your account, not in the cookie.

9. Browser settings

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

What each option does

  • Block all cookies: our cart and checkout will stop working
  • Block third-party cookies: stops most tracking, store still works
  • Delete existing cookies: signs you out and empties your cart
  • Site exceptions: allow our site while blocking others

10. Mobile devices

iPhone and iPad

  • Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Block All Cookies
  • Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, for app tracking

Android

  • Chrome → Menu → Settings → Site settings → Cookies
  • Settings → Google → Ads, for ad personalisation

Menu names shift between operating system versions, so treat these as a starting point rather than exact paths.

11. Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when our cookies change — for example if we add a new analytics or advertising service. The revision date at the top always reflects the current version.

Material changes will be flagged on the site, and by email to registered customers where the change affects them.
